On the Fourth Sunday in Lent, sometimes known as Mothering Sunday, we get the parable of a man that had two sons. This parable is one of Jesus’ more popular one — The Prodigal Son. It has all the makings of a hit — dissolute living, disagreeable brothers, and a party.
This parable captured the attention of Rembrandt, and Rembrandt’s painting captured the attention of Henri Nouwen. Rembrandt rendered the characters in a way that they could be seen, and Nouwen took time to see them. Maybe that is what this parable is about — relationships where we are all seen and really known.
